It was announced this morning that the USA Women's National Hockey Team will be boycotting the 2017 World Championships, beginning March 31st in Plymouth, Michigan.
Players on the team have come out and said that they have been working to negotiate new contracts with USA Hockey for over a year with no real progress. The boycott is done as a power move to show USA Hockey that ultimately, there is no sport without the players, and they deserve to have their voice heard.
The movement is being linked in with the #BeBoldForChange growth on Twitter; one by one, players on the team this morning have been tweeting the following statement.
Women's hockey players have been mistreated for a long time now so this is overdue. It's unfortunate that they're going to miss the World Championships, but something has to be done and this move will ultimately result in a step forward for women's hockey.
